Purpose:
To present a case of 35-year-old patient with an advanced corneal ectasia of left eye after 2 LASIK procedures.
Setting:
Clinical Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital No. 5, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland
Methods:
The patient was admitted for consultation to the Ambulatory of Corneal Diseases, Clinical Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital nr 5, Katowice, Poland. Five years before he underwent a LASIK surgery of both eyes, (indication was myopia of /-3,5 Dsph -1,75 D cyl ax 82/ right eye and /-2,0 D sph -4,5 D cyl ax 89/ left eye). After 2 weeks the same procedure of left eye was repeated because no target correction was reached.
Clinical examination at admission showed a significant decrease in visual acuity of the left eye (best corrected visual acuity =0,01), the scar of central cornea. Central corneal thickness was 312 microns.
Results:
The patient was diagnosed with advanced corneal ectasia of the left eye and qualified for penetrating keratoplasty.
Conclusions:
LASIK procedure thins and weakens the cornea, that may lead to progressive corneal ectasia. In cases of advanced ectasia
a penetrating keratoplasty should be considered. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
