Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy and visual outcomes in patients undergoing either implantation of the KAMRA inlay or monovision LASIK for the treatment of ametropic presbyopia.
Setting:
Vista Eye Specialist, Selangor, Malaysia
Methods:
Retrospective evaluation of 72 KAMRA inlay patients and 30 monovision patients. Study visits were at pre-op, Day 1, Week 1, and Months 1, 3, 6, and 12. Inclusion criterias: age 42-55 years, reading ability of N8 (J5) or worse, no previous corneal procedures or problems, and no contra-indication for Lasik.
Results:
The mean age of enrolled patients was 46.1 ± 4.3 years. At Month 6, KAMRA patients were statistically significantly more likely to achieve a UCDVA of 20/20 or better than monovision patients; 91.7% versus 50%, respectively, (P=.041). 100% were 20/32 or better in both groups. For UCNVA, 75% achieved uncorrected near acuity of N4 or better with the KAMRA inlay, compared with 66.7% with monovision LASIK. 100% of patients in both groups were able to read at N5.
Conclusions:
Implantation of the KAMRA inlay provided better visual results than monovision LASIK. This study is ongoing and longer-term data are being collected. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
