Purpose:
To study the differences of phacoemulsification of intumescent and mature " white cataract" in german patients.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Helios Hospitals Berlin Buch, Berlin, Germany.
Methods:
Phacoemulsification was performed by a single surgeon in 26 eyes with " white cataract" using a standard technique. 13 eyes have an intumescent " white cataract" (Group 1). Preoperative and intraoperative findings, as well as postoperative outcomes, were analysed.
Results:
The mean age of patients with intumescent " white cataract" (Group 1) was 54,8 (± 8,1) years and the mean age of patients with mature " white cataract" (Group 2) was 82,7 (± 5,7) years. The mean age was significantly different (p<0.05). The mean effective phacoemulsification time was 21.1 s (± 7.6) in Group 1 and 43.3 s (± 12.0) in Group 2. These values were significantly different (p<0.05). The postoperative mean best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) was 0.54 (±0.34) in Group 1 and 0.2 (± 0.21) in Group 2 and was also significantly different (p<0.05).
Conclusions:
The german patients with intumescent " white cataract" were significantly younger. In this group a significantly shorter mean effective phacoemulsification time was required and a significantly better postoperative mean best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) was achieved.
