Accurate continuous circular capsulorhexis is important to prevent posterior capsular opacification

Purpose:

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery is still one of the important complications. In this study, we investigate the importance of accurate continuous circular capsulprhexis (CCC) to prevent PCO.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan

Methods:

Subjects comprised 40 eyes that underwent phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL, NY-60, HOYA) implantation. Images were taken using an EAS-1000 (NIDEK) after 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively, and patients were divided into the CCC was totally covered the IOL optic (CC group), and the part of the CCC was outside the IOL optic (NCC group). To analyze the PCO, retroillumination images was quantitatively analyzed using imaging analysis software, Scion Image (Sion). And relationship between shape of CCC and PCO developments were investigated.

Results:

The development of PCO in NCC group was significantly higher than in CC group during the all investigated periods. The PCO were started on the part of the CCC was outside the IOL in NCC group in detail. In NCC group, when the IOL haptic placed in NCC area, the development of PCO was below.

Conclusions:

To prevent PCO, accurate CCC is important basically. In case of inaccurate CCC, placement of IOL hatic to NCC area may prevent early development of PCO. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
