Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the performance of the new toric Tecnis 1-piece multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) ZMT.

Setting:

Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg, Austria. Department of Ophthalmology

Methods:

In a prospective, multicenter study the Tecnis Toric Multifocal 1-Piece IOL ZMT (AMO) is implanted in cataract patients (n= 30). After having signed informed consent, subjects are bilaterally implanted with either two ZMT IOLs or with a ZMT IOL in the first eye and a Tecnis Multifocal IOL ZMB00 in the second eye if this does not require a cylinder correction. Follow-up visits take place 1 day and 1 week after surgery for each eye and 1 month and 3 months after surgery for both eyes. Key evaluation criteria are uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity for near and distance, defocus curves, refractive outcome, ocular/visual symptoms, rotational stability, spectacle independence and patient satisfaction.

Results:

In earlier studies the Tecnis Toric IOL proved to be an effective and predictable method for surgical correction of astigmatism with mean IOL rotation from the desired axis of approximately 3 degrees. Several studies on the Tecnis Multifocal IOLs have shown that this IOL provides excellent visual outcome at all distances with very high degree of spectacle independence and patient satisfaction. Combining the optical principles of these two IOLs in a new Tecnis Toric Multifocal IOL should result in very good visual results also in astigmatic eyes.

Conclusions:

First results with the new Tecnis Toric Multifocal IOL will be presented and should indicate that combining a diffractive posterior surface with an established 1-Piece toric design results in very good visual outcome and high satisfaction also in astigmatic patients.
