Purpose:
To assess whether the limbal stem cell and amniotic membrane transplantation is useful in patients with recurrent CIN
Setting:
S. MalayanÂ’s Ophthalmologic Center, Yerevan, Armenia
Methods:
A retrospective review of limbal stem cell and amniotic membrane transplantation in patients with CIN for the last 7 years. The results have been evaluated to determine if this surgery is safe and useful for patients with CIN.
Results:
For the last 7 years of observation there were 2 patients with CIN ( both male ). One patient was referred in 2005 and the other one in 2006. Both had lesions in their right eye involving 180 degrees of peripheral cornea and limbus. Patients have undergone CIN removal with amniotic membrane transplantation, have received interferon alpha 2b qid for 4 months and were stable for 6-7 years. In 2010 they were seen again with one month apart and had recurrent CIN this time involving 320 degrees of peripheral cornea and limbus and extension onto the central cornea in one of the patients. The patients underwent CIN removal with total epithelial debridement and limbal stem cell (from the other eye) and amniotic membrane transplantation again, were prescribed interferon alpha 2 b eye drops qid for 4 month. The follow-up period includes now 8 months. The patientsÂ’ eye conditions are stable, no epithelial defect, no recurrence so far. Systemic work-up was negative.
Conclusions:
The results have proved that the limbal stem cell and amniotic membrane transplantation is safe and useful surgery in patients with CIN and can prevent development of persistent epithelial defect. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
