Purpose:
To compare 2 years outcomes of Keraring® (Mediphacos, Belo Horizonte-MG, Brazil) and Intacs® (Addition Technology, Inc, Des Plaines, IL) implantation for keratoconus patients.
Setting:
Shinagawa LASIK Center, Tokyo, Japan
Methods:
In this retrospective study, 52 eyes of 32 keratoconus patients who were unable to correct their refractive error using contact lenses underwent intrastromal corneal ring implantation between February 2007 and October 2008 at Shinagawa LASIK Center. The mean age (±SD) was 32.8 ± 9.5 years. The last patient check-up was 2 years after their operation.
Results:
Keraring® was implanted in 33 eyes of 19 patients and Intacs® was implanted in 19 eyes of 13 patients. The mean (±SD) preoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, decimal), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA, decimal), manifest sphere, manifest cylinder were 0.09 ± 0.32, 0.73 ± 0.56, -4.52 ± 5.03 D, and -3.33 ± 2.68 D, respectively for Keraring® patients and 0.14 ± 0.44, 1.10 ± 0.55, -1.79 ± 2.01 D, and -2.61 ± 2.04 D, respectively for Intacs® patients. At 2 years post operation, the mean (±SD) UDVA (decimal), CDVA (decimal), manifest sphere, and manifest cylinder were 0.41 ± 0.45, 0.69 ± 0.63, 1.73 ± 2.91 D, and -1.39 ± 1.61 D, respectively for Keraring® patients and 0.62 ± 0.42, 1.17 ± 0.85, -0.15 ± 0.99 D, and -0.65 ± 0.65 D, respectively for Intacs® patients. Additionally, a significant difference (P=0.001) in K-readings change at 1 years was observed between the groups. Keraring® patients improved by 5.61 D and Intacts® patients improved only 2.10 D.
Conclusions:
Both intrastromal corneal rings were effective for the treatment of keratoconus but Keraring® patients demonstrated higher efficacy for the correction of corneal curvature.
