Salvaging a drowning nucleus/segment during phacoemulsification, a novel way

Purpose:

to demonstrate the technique of recovering a drowning nucleus/segment during Phacoemulsification

Setting:

Prakash Netralaya & Retina Foundation, Aligarh, U.P., India

Methods:

Pars plana entered thru conjunctiva with 20G MVR. Drowned segment pushed into AC. Incision enlarged. Segment delivered. After vitrectomy, IOL placed in sulcus. Wound closed by hydration.

Results:

Excellent visual results are achieved, comparable to uncomplicated Phaco surgery.

Conclusions:

Despite a mishap during Phaco surgery, this simple technique lets us implant a PC IOL as well s avoid time consuming, expensive and complicated VR surgery. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE?: No
