Abstract Details

Purpose:

To propose an evaluation method for the long term incidence of visually significant posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after implantation WIOL-CF® hydrogel intraocular lens based on YAG capsulotomy rates

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department of Central Military Hospital Prague, Czech Republic

Methods:

For the retrospective chart review were used the medical records of patients who underwent implantation of WIOL-CF® hydrogel intraocular lens during 4-year period (2003-2007). Due to necessity take into account censored data was used Kaplan-Meier estimation for survival analysis.

Results:

24 patients (30 eyes) who were underwent implantation of WIOL-CF® hydrogel intraocular lens during 4-year period were reviewed. The mean follow-up time is 700.4 days +/- 304 (SD). YAG laser capsulotomy was performed in 3.3% of patients in the course of 4 years (0.8 % per year). Survival analysis demonstrated probability of 95.7 % for any patient to survive 4 years after the WIOL-CF® lens implantation without a YAG laser capsulotomy. Results were compared with survival rates of hypothetical patients with different IOLs with various assumed YAG laser capsulotomy rates.

Conclusions:

The results shows that the frequency of eyes with posterior capsule opacification after implantation WIOL-CF® hydrogel intraocular lens needing capsulotomy was in this retrospective review low. These results are in accordance with previous publications. The selected Kaplan-Meier estimation appears to be useful analytical tool for retrospective research with censored data.
