A pilot project to develop online progress test for ophthalmology residents as an innovation to prepare national board examination

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To develop online progress test for ophthalmology residents and to evaluate the process based on results score, time, and location accessing the test.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Methods:

Developing online progress test that consists of 1000 items of MCQs bank from 10 subdivisions of ophthalmology that is in line with national board exam in Indonesia. All ophthalmology residents in Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (n=58) were assigned to access the test in a 2-week period online. The test opened 24 hours in Gadjah Mada Medical E-learning website, 60 minutes duration for 60 items of questions in every access. Spearman correlation test was used to correlate the level semester of the resident, results score, and time of access.

Results:

Progress test ran effectively, accessed 62 times by 42 residents. The results show that the results score of the ophthalmology residents has a significant correlation with the semester level of the residents (p = 0.02), especially residents who are prepared and has done national exam, who got relatively higher scores. Time for access varied: 33 accessed in working hours and 39 outside working hours. Higher semester residents have a tendency to access during working hours in campus settings.

Conclusions:

Innovative online progress test provides advantages to facilitate ophthalmology residents to learn during their limited time of study. The residents were able to access it flexibly, based on their time of preference to improve their competency and to prepare national board examination.
