Study of refractive outcomes after PRK among patients with hypertropia older than 50 years

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the refractive outcomes after PRK among patients with hypertropia older than 50 years.

Setting:

Negah Eye Center, Tehran, Iran.

Methods:

This prospective study was performed among 50 patients older than 50 years (35 females and 15 males), with hypertropia more than 2 diopter and less than 5 diopter who underwent PRK with mitomycin application. The patients had astigmatism of between 0.5 and 2 diopter. All patients had a corrected visual acuity of 10/10 in both eyes before surgery. No patient with any sign of cataract entered the study. The PRK was performed using a Technolas 317P machine and the standard method combined with application of mitomycin for 10 to 20 seconds was used.

Results:

Four weeks postsurgery all patients had a sight between near and far vision. Sixty percent had UCVA of 6/10 to 8/10 while for 24 percent this was better than 8/10 and for 16 percent this was 4/10 to 5/10. All patients were also evaluated two months postsurgery. At this time 90% were overcorrected between 0.5 and 2 diopter. Eighty six percent had uncorrected distance visual acuity of 9/10 to 10/10 while for 8 percent of patients this was 8/10 to 9/10 and for 6 percent 7/10 to 8/10. So 86 percent of patients had acceptable far uncorrected visual acuity with no need to use spectacles. Also at this time 74 percent of patients did not require spectacles for near vision.

Conclusions:

It seems that PRK among patients with hypertropia older than 50 years might have acceptable results and reduce the patients’ need to use glasses for both near and distance vision.
