Small incision lenticule extraction and LASIK in low myopia

Purpose:
Eyes with low myopia may be eligible for full correction with LASIK or Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE). We report refractive outcomes of eyes with low myopia and myopic astigmatism after SMILE surgery in comparison to LASIK treated eyes.
Setting:
Center for Refractive Surgery, Eye Department at St. Francis Hospital, Muenster, Germany
Methods:
Observational case series of our first consecutive SMILE surgeries in low myopia up to 4 D spherical equivalent. Same surgeon performed SMILE in 55 eyes of 31 patients with the VISUMAX femtosecond laser platform (Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany). SMILE parameters: 120µm cap thickness, 6.5mm lenticule diameter. LASIK parameters: 120µm flap thickness, 6.5mm optical zone size (Technolas 217P, Munich, Germany). Follow-up visits at 1 day, 1 week, and 3 months after surgery. Outcome measurements: uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, decimal scale), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA, decimal scale), subjective refraction, and objective refraction.
Results:
UDVA was on average 0.67/0.78/1.04 1 day/1 week/3 months after SMILE and 0.85/0.92/1.06 after Femto-LASIK, respectively. Efficacy was on average 0.57/0.65/0.86 1 day/1 week/3 months after SMILE and 0.68/0.75/0.84 after Femto-LASIK, respectively.
Conclusions:
In low myopic eyes our first SMILE surgeries were safe to perform and yielded visual results comparable to LASIK.
