Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the value of cornea surface measurement using Image J software in following keratoconus progression
Setting:
Saint-Joseph University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology
Methods:
22 eyes of 19 patients with stage 2 Keratoconus and treated with Intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) were included in this study. Topography sagittal map before and after ICRS implantation were used to measure cone surface using Image J software ® (ImageJ 1.49v, National Institute of Health, USA). % Area index (percentage of the surface the cone occupies on the anterior curvature sagittal map) was used to compare for cone surface progression/regression.
Results:
% Area index was 42% and decreased to 30.2% after ICRS implantation. Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) increased from 0.27 to 0.58 decimal. Decrease in the % Area index was correlated to increased VA (p<0.05).
Conclusions:
Cornea surface index (% Area index) may be a new tool to be integrated in Topographer machines to measure cone progression in keratoconus.
