Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the long term state of the corneal endothelium of patients after radial keratotomy (RK) using endothelial microscopy (EM).

Setting:

Ufa Eye Research Institute, Russia

Methods:

EM was performed on 81 eyes in 46 patients after RK (study group) and 70 eyes of 36 patients with refractive-axial myopia of high to medium (control group). The average age in the study group was 52.1±5.8 years (39-63), in the control group – 53.6±6.3 years (39-64). The average prescription of RK – 22.7±2.7 years (16-29). Patients with concomitant ocular pathology that could lead to loss of endothelial cell density (ECD) from both groups were excluded. The study was performed on endothelial microscope EM-3000 (Tomey, Japan). ECD, the coefficient of variation (CV) and percentage of hexagonal were measured.

Results:

ECD in the control group averaged 2677.71±170.6 cells/mm2, in patients after RK – 2026.53±305.4 cells/mm2 (p<0.05). Reduction of ECD in the study group compared with the control taken as the norm was essential and achieved 24.3%. In the study group CV was 0.44±0.07, in the control group – 0.29±0.04 (p<0.05). Percentage hexagonal cells in patients after RK was 40.4±11.2, in the control group – 68.8±7.5 (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

In the long term after radial keratotomy patients showed a significant reduction in the density of endothelial cells, increasing the coefficient of variation in cell size and a decrease in the percentage hexagonal.
