Abstract Details

Purpose:

Analysis of Lasik results in connection with the use of dexamethasone 0.1% in the form of instillations before surgery.

Setting:

Dr. Kurenkov Clinic, Moscow, Russia

Methods:

A post hoc analysis of patients underwent Lasik surgery was made in the period from 2014 to 2016. 54 patients (23 men, 31 women aged 19-45 years) were administrated with dexamethasone 0.1% eye drops into one eye before surgery for various reasons (eye surface diseases, instillations following retinal laser photocoagulation). The control group included 54 second eyes of these patients without dexamethasone instillations. The subject of research was cornea of both eyes following Lasik surgery. Visual acuity without correction, biomicroscopy of the cornea were examined on the first, fourth and seventh day after surgery.

Results:

On the first day after surgery visual acuity in the main group was 0.77, in the control group - 0.69. Biomicroscopy: signs of corneal flap edema, haze in 12 eyes in the main group, 22 eyes in the control group. On the fourth day visual acuity in the main group reached 0.89, in the control group - 0.75. Biomicroscopy: edema in 2 eyes in the main group, 8 eyes in the control group. On the seventh day visual acuity reached 0.92 and 0.88 accordingly. Biomicroscopy: no eyes in the main group, in the control group - 3 eyes.

Conclusions:

The results received on the basis of the post hoc analysis suggest that dexamethasone 0.1% has a beneficial effect on the postoperative development of edema of the flap which contributes to a faster restoration of visual functions. It is anticipated that a prospective study on the effectiveness of dexamethasone 1.0% will be carried out as a preoperative preparation drug in order to shorten rehabilitation of patients underwent Lasik surgery.
