Management of severe Sands of Sahara syndrome complication: a South African study

Abstract Details

Purpose:

A case study to discuss the management of severe post-Lasik Sands of Sahara syndrome.

Setting:

Single centre, private ophthalmology clinic, Tygervalley Eye & Laser Centre, Bellville, Cape Town, South Africa.

Methods:

A medical doctor developed severe complicated Sands of Sahara post Lasik. After medical management the patient had a poor visual outcome due to scarring. The patient then had microkeratome-assisted lamellar Keratoplasty followed by modified iLasik technique.

Results:

The technique and results are shown. Double pass ALK, 400µm donor graft. Pre-op wavescan: -2.88/-1.00x72, Pre-op BCVA: 20/100, Post-graft BCVA: 20/25, Post iLasik UNCVA: 20/20.

Conclusions:

Lasik can have severe complications of which one is Sands of Sahara. It can be devastating and cause loss of best-corrected vision, which may lead to the necessity for graft, as in this case. This patient had successful surgical intervention.
