Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the changes in visual, refractive, corneal topographic and topometric parameters after intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) of 5 mm diameter implantation in eyes with keratoconus
Setting:
Dokuz Eylul University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology
Methods:
Ten eyes of 8 keratoconus patients who underwent ICRS implantation for visual rehabilitation were analyzed with Scheimpflug camera (Pentacam, Oculus®) preoperatively and postoperatively at the first week. Uncorrected and best corrected visual acuities (UCVA and BCVA in Snellen lines, respectively), refractive errors, simulated keratometric (SimK) readings and topometric parameters (ie, index of surface variance, ISV; index of vertical asyymmetry, IVA; keratoconus index, KI; center keratoconus index, CKI; index of height asymmetry, IHA; index of height decentration, IHD; minimum axial curvature, Rmin; anterior chamber depth, ACD; anterior chamber volüme, ACvol) were analyzed.
Results:
Ten eyes of 8 patients were implanted with 1 or 2 ICRS (150µ–300µ thick, 90°-210° arc length) into stromal channels of 5.04±0.05mm inner and 5.73±0.05mm outer diameters. Mean UCVA (0.16±0.12 to 0.67±0.28) and BCVA (0.3±0.07 to 0.78±0.19) improved (p<0.01, for both). Mean refractive spherical equivalent (-5.83±5.13D to -2.50±2.95D) improved (p=0.05). Mean refractive astigmatism (-6.95±2.33 to -2.65±2.02) and steep SimK (53.17±4.5 to 49.46±4.89) decreased significantly (p<0.01). Mean ISV (101.1±33.88 to 85.9±27.01), KI (1.26±0.16 to 1.17±0.14), Rmin (5.83±0.62 to 6.03±0.70) and ACD decreased (3.59±0.35mm to 3.34±0.51mm) (p<0.05 for all) but mean ACvol did not change (173.5±33.14 to 170.8±30.93) significantly (p=0.3).
Conclusions:
Intracorneal ring segment implantation seem to improve visual, refractive, topographic and tomopetric parameters of the keratoconic corneas
