Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the visual outcomes using a quality of vision questionnaire after bifocal and trifocal intra-ocular lens implantation after cataract extraction.
Setting:
Clinica Salgado-Borges and Hospital Privado da Boa Nova, Porto, Portugal
Methods:
149 subjects underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including the application of the QoV questionnaire translated into Portuguese. QoV scores were calculated for the three subscales of the questionnaire were calculated and the distribution of individual symptoms were evaluated. Of those, 25 patients (61±8 years) were used as control subjects with cataract but not operated, 52 (71±7 years) were implanted with monofocal aspherical (Tecnis ZA9003), 33 (59±8 years) were implanted with bifocal (Tecnis ZMB00/Acrysoft Restor) and 39 (65±8 years) were implanted with a trifocal IOL (ATLisa 839MP /FineVision). Scores of frequency, severity and bothersome were calculated.
Results:
Compared with the non-operated controls (frequency= 45±23, severity=38±21, bothersome=42±25), all groups showed a decrease in the parameters of frequency, severity and bothersome. As expected, the monofocal group showed the lowest values for the mentioned scores (22±21, 20±19, 16±20 for frequency, severity and bothersome, respectively) and differences were statistically significant (p<0.05). Trifocal lenses showed the highest scores (42±19, 34±17, 27±19 for frequency, severity and bothersome, respectively) being significantly different from the monofocal group, but not when compared with the bifocal group.
Conclusions:
The translated version of the quality of vision questionnaire is sensitive to the differences in photic phenomena experience by pseudophakic patients implanted with monofocal, bifocal and trifocal IOLs after cataract estraction. This methodology might be of help to improve our understanding and quantification of subjective complains after Premium intra-ocular lens implantation.
