Astigmatism correction with the aspheric Precizon® toric intraocular lens in cataract surgery and refractive lensectomy

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the refractive outcomes of the aspheric Precizon® toric intraocular lens (Ophtec BV, Groningen, the Netherlands) for the correction of corneal astigmatism in cataract and refractive surgery.

Setting:

Clínica Baviera, Castellón and COSS, Centro Oftálmico de San Sebastián, Spain.

Methods:

A total of 35 eyes of patients with corneal astigmatism greater than 1.0 diopter (D) underwent cataract surgery or refractive lensectomy with implantation of the Precizon® toric intraocular lens. Intraocular lens power calculation was performed using optical coherence biometry (IOLMaster®). Refractive status and lens misalignment were evaluated by vector analysis one month after surgery. Preoperative astigmatism was evaluated by keratometric readings, since refraction was not reliable in many cases due to a preexisting cataract. Changes in keratometric values before and after surgery were studied to reveal surgical-induced astigmatism. Predictability was assessed by comparing preoperative corneal astigmatism with postoperative refractive outcome.

Results:

Vector decomposition of keratometric readings revealed a negligible surgically induced astigmatism of -0.25x90º. Mean preoperative corneal astigmatism was -2.28 ± 0.90 D, whereas mean refractive astigmatism after surgery was -0.32 ± 0.46 D. One sample t-test revealed no differences from zero (total correction) for the post-surgical refractive astigmatism neither for the J0 component (mean value -0.03 ± 0.19 D, t=0.248) nor for the J45 component (mean value 0.01 ± 0.22 D, t=0.488). Twenty-eight eyes (80%) showed a misalignment in the IOL axis lower than 7º.

Conclusions:

Implantation of the Precizon® toric intraocular lens in patients undergoing cataract surgery or refractive lensectomy was safe, predictable and effective for the correction of corneal astigmatism.
