Long-term refractive outcomes in patients after toric IOL implantation

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the study was to evaluate the long term refractive outcomes in patients with preexisting corneal astigmatism and toric IOL implantation.

Setting:

2nd Ophthalmology Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece

Methods:

The records of patients underwent cataract surgery from January 2007 to December 2015 were reviewed. Eyes in this study underwent phacoemulsification and toric IOL implanted unilaterally or bilaterally. Eligible patients were examined regarding their spherical equivalent (SE), residual astigmatism and spectacle independence for distance vision.

Results:

Our results confirmed that toric IOL offers spectacle independence for distance vision. Nevertheless this effect is compromised in cases with significant residual SE.

Conclusions:

Toric IOLs are an efficient tool for ophthalmic surgeons to correct significant pre-existing corneal astigmatism. Special care should be paid to meticulous IOL power calculation since residual refractive error significantly reduces efficient correction of abnormal corneal toricity.
