Pseudophakic toric IOL implantation in keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Our purpose was to examine the long-term efficacy of toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in cataract patient with high astigmatism (-10.00D Cyl) due to corneal ectasia, who underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery which remained stable over time. Postoperative follow-up was done at a regular interval of 3 months within a period of 1 year.

Setting:

orbit eye hospital, Mumbai, India.

Methods:

Patients with topographically stable keratoconus or pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD), in which phacoemulsification with toric IOL implantation was used to correct high astigmatism, are reported. Objective and subjective refraction, visual acuity measurement and corneal topography were performed. Specifically, in subjective refraction, patient achieved visual acuity 6/9p with a residual -1.50D Cyl on objective refraction , N6 with ADD+2.50DS .Corneal topography also remained stable.

Results:

There was a significant improvement in visual acuity, as well as refraction.

Conclusions:

Cataract surgery with toric IOL implantation seems to be safe and effective in correcting astigmatism and improving visual function in cataract patient with topographically stable keratoconus or PMD.
