Abstract Details
Purpose:
Bifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are presbiopia-correcting lenses which may be implanted after cataract surgery or in case of clear lens extraction (CLE). Their main feature is that they enable good distance and near vision. With the invention of trifocal and extended range of vision IOLs, also the intermediate vision is significantly improved. The aim of this study is to present visual and optical outcome of our first 40 clear lens extractions implanted with new trifocal intraocular lens with extended depth of focus which has near adition of +3.00 diopters (D) and intermediate addition of +1.50 D.
Setting:
University Eye Hospital ‘Svjetlost’, Zagreb, CROATIA
Methods:
In this prospective study, 76 eyes of 38 patients were implanted with new trifocal IOL Acriva Reviol Tri-ED. Patients were aged 45-68 years; 90% were hyperopic and 10 % myopic, 10 cataracts and 28 CLE. Monocular and binocular uncorreceted visual acuity at distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) were measured, together with the incidence of halo, glare and PCO formation. Patients were followed-up for at least 3 months.
Results:
All patients achieved monocular UDVA ≥0.1 logMar (decimal 0.8), and 85% of eyes had 0.0 logMar (1.0). Monocular UIVA ≥0.2 logMar (0.63) was achieved in 90% of patients (40% had 0.0logMar or 1.0). All patients could read J2 and better monoculary and 78% of eyes could read J1. Halo and glare were reported in 6 of 38 patients (15%). There was no need for LASIK enhancement. Spherical equivalent was ≤ 0.5 D in 95% of eyes.
Conclusions:
Implantation of new trifocal extended depth of focus IOL enables good vision at all distances with low incidence of optical symptoms. It seems to be an excellent choice for younger, active presbyopes in need of good near and intermediate vision.
