Initial results with a new trifocal diffractive hydrophobic IOL

Purpose:
To report the initial results with implantation of a trifocal IOL. This trifocal IOL has a correction for distance at 40 and 60 cm.

Methods:
Prospective case series of 26 eyes (13 patients) implanted between July 4th 2015 and September 30th 2015 with the TFNT00 PanOptix trifocal IOL (Alcon, Fort Worth, USA) were prospectively followed. Outcome measures at 3 months were uncorrected distance acuity (UDVA)and corrected distance acuity (CDVA), patient preferred uncorrected near acuity (UNA), and monocular and binocular defocus curves, as well as mean spherical equivalent refraction (SE). Patient satisfaction, incidence of halos, and side effects were recorded.
Results:
The mean UDVA and CDVA at 3 months was -0.02 + 0.09 logMAR (0.1 to -0.18) and -0.05 + 0.07 (0.1 to -0.18) respectively. Patient preferred uncorrected near acuity was logMAR 0 in all patients. Mean postoperative SE was 0.06D + 0.26 (0.5D to -0.5D). The defocus curves showed a logMAR acuity of above 0.1 between +1D and -3D in the curve. Halos occurred in 3 patients. In 2 patients 1 eye was treated with a YAG capsulotomy at 3 months, with improved visual acuity and resolution of halos. All but 1 patient were satisfied (92.3%).
Conclusions:
The new trifocal IOL effectively corrects vision for distance, near and intermediate vision. Side effects may include halos due to increased sensitivity to posterior capsular folds and fibrosis. More study is needed to assess the behavior of the lens in clinical practice.
