Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate functional outcomes of two trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) with different intermediate focal distances: the AcrySof IQ PanOptix (Alcon Inc.) and AT Lisa tri 839 MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

In this ongoing retro- and prospective, monocentric , ethic-committee approved study, cataract and clear lens exchange (CLE) patients were examined 3 months postoperatively after implantation of PanOptix or AT Lisa tri trifocal IOL. Examinations included refraction, uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA/CDVA), uncorrected and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (60 or 80 cm, UIVA/DCIVA) and uncorrected / distance corrected / corrected near visual acuities (40 cm, UNVA, DCNVA, CNVA) as well as defocus curve measurements. In addition patients were asked to fill out a subjective questionnaire.

Results:

So far, 11 eyes (PanOptix, median age 65 years) and 10 eyes (AT Lisa tri, median age 49 years) were examined. For PanOptix/AT Lisa tri median visual acuities were as follows: UDVA 0.07/0.02 logMAR, CDVA 0.00/-0.02 logMAR, UIVA (60/80 cm) 0.04/0.02 logMAR, DCIVA (60/80 cm) 0.04/0.00 logMAR, UNVA 0.05/0.12 logMAR and DCNVA 0.01/0.01 logMAR. In the PanOptix group no addition for CNVA of CIVA was accepted. In the AT Lisa tri group median CIVA was -0.06 logMAR and CNVA 0.08 logMAR. Postoperative median SE was 0.00/-0.25 D whereas the PanOptix group showed less deviation from target refraction.

Conclusions:

Both trifocal IOLs revealed good functional results for distance, intermediate and near visual acuity. The PanOptix group showed less deviation from target refraction. Differences in the second peak of the monocular defocus curves were noticeable.
