Trifocal intraocular IOLs as solution to spectacle independence post cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate visual, refractive parameters and quality of vision after bilateral implantation of trifocal intraocular lenses.

Setting:

Ojas laser Surgery Centre, Bandra, Mumbai. Cataract surgery done by Phacoemulsification with implantation of trifocal IOL, done by single surgeon

Methods:

Observational prospective study was done. Thirty patients who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification with trifocal lens implantation formed study population. All patients had corneal astigmatism <1.0D, normal retina and IOL power between +10.0D and +30.0D. Post op vision, contrast vision, refraction and quality of vision was assesed at 1 month. Vision for distance was measured with Snellen's chart, intermediate with Sloan's chart, near with Snellen's chart and quality of vision was analysed with VF-7 charts. Contrast sensitivity was measured using Colenbrander chart. Spherical equivalent was also measured at 1 month

Results:

At one month postop 24 eyes (80%) had visual acuity of 6/6, rest 6 eyes (20%) had 6/6 part vision, intermediate vision in 22 eyes (73.3%) was 20/20 and rest 8 eyes (26.6%) was 20/25, .near vision in 22 eyes (73.3%) was N5 and in 8 eyes (26.6%) was N6. Spherical equivalent (SE) in 9 eyes (30%) was 0, 18 eyes (60%) had SE +0.5D or less and 3 eyes (10%) ha SE less than -0.75D or less. No significant reduction in contrast sensitivity was seen. VF-7 scores were better post operatively. Only one patient complained of haloes.

Conclusions:

In this study subjects with trifocal lenses reported good distance, near and intermediate visual acuity. Significant improvement in quality of vision was noted post operatively. Post operative spherical equivalent was more hyperopic than zero or myopic, but was negligible
