Visual outcomes of a new trifocal intraocular lens and its comparison with a full diffractive and an extended-range-of-vision intraocular lenses

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine clinical outcomes after implantation of the new PanOptix intraocular lens (IOL) and its comparison with the visual outcomes obtained from the full diffractive FineVision IOL and the extended range of vision Symfony IOL.
Setting:
Oftalvist CIO Jerez, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
Methods:
Consecutive eyes of patients with bilateral cataract were divided into 3 groups. One group had implantation of a new trifocal IOL (PanOptix), other group had implantation of a full diffractive IOL (FineVision) and the other group of an extended range of vision IOL (Symfony). Distance, intermediate and near visual acuities, and defocus curves were evaluated postoperatively. Contrast sensitivity (photopic and mesopic), quality of life, photic phenomena (halos) and posterior capsule opacification (PCO) were also evaluated.
Results:
The mean uncorrected visual acuities (distance, intermediate and near, respectively) were -0.01±0.08, 0.06±0.08 and 0.09±0.08 (LogMAR) for PanOptix, 0.03±0.06, 0.10±0.08 and 0.07±0.07 for FineVision, and 0.05±0.05, 0.08±0.09 and 0.17±0.07 for Symfony. Significant differences were found between Symfony and both PanOptix and FineVision IOLs (p<0.05). Significant differences were found in defocuse curves between trifocal IOLs and the extended range of vision IOL in the rage from -2.5 to -4.0 D (p<0.05). The photopic contrast sensitivity was similar for all IOLs and did not decrease in mesopic conditions. No differences were found in photic phenomena (halos) and PCO between IOLs.
Conclusions:
All studied IOLs provide satisfactory visual outcomes and high quality visual function in distance and intermediate vision. The PanOptix and FineVision IOLs show good outcomes for near vision.
