Clinical experience with trifocal and trifocal-toric intraocular lenses

Purpose:
To report clinical performance of trifocal and trifocal-toric IOLs.
Setting:
: Ein-Tal Eye Center, Tel Aviv, Israel
Methods:
Operations were performed by a single surgeon between March 2014 and December 2015. Preoperative evaluation included complete optometric and biomicroscopic evaluation, biometry using both the IOL-Master and Lenstar, corneal topography and tomography and retinal OCT. IOL power calculation was done by averaging 3rd and 4th generation formulas.
Results:
Sixty Finevision trifocal and 11 trifocal –toric IOLs (PhysIOL, Belgium) were implant following uneventful operations. In the toric lenses group mean UCDVA was 6/7.5 and 90% achieved 6/9 or better and 97% achieved UCNVA of J2 or better. In the trifocal-toric group mean postoperative residual astigmatism was 0.20 diopters (range: 0.00-0.50 diopters). Mean UCDVA was 6/6.5, mean UCIVA was also 6/6.5 and 91% achieved J1 UCNVA. Subjective complaints were clinically nonsignificant.
Conclusions:
Trifocal intraocular lenses provide excellent visual correction for all distances: far, intermediate and near with minimal optical aberrations. Preoperative evaluation using multiple instruments and formulas is essential to provide high accuracy and repeatability.
