Visual outcomes of a toric trifocal diffractive intraocular lens

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine and evaluate rotational stability, refractive and visual outcomes of a toric trifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) for correction of preexisting corneal astigmatism and presbyopia during routine phacoemulsification surgery.
Setting:
Instituto Oftalmológico Integral and Instituto Oftalmológico Clinsafa, Admiravisión, Barcelona, Spain.
Methods:
Retrospective case series of 26 eyes of 20 patients with corneal astigmatism of 1,25 diopters (D) or more that had phacoemulsification surgery with implantation of the Finevision Toric IOL (Physiol). Visual outcomes and astigmatism changes were analyzed. Rotational stability was evaluated, measuring the IOL position at 24 hours postoperatively and at the last follow-up visit. Finally, safety and efficacy indices of the surgical procedure were calculated. The mean follow-up was 7,35 months (range from 3 to 14 months).
Results:
A statistically significant improvement with surgery was observed in uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity (p < 0,05). The mean preoperative refractive and keratometric astigmatisms were -1,92D (range -0,50 to -4D) and -2,2D (range -1,37 to -4,15D) respectively. The mean residual postoperative astigmatism was -0,29D+/-0,37D (range 0 to -1,00D), with a mean reduction of 1,64D compared to preoperative cylinder. In 19 eyes (73,08%) the IOL was stable without rotation, and only 1 eye (3,85%) had a 15º rotation that required of surgical reposition of the IOL. The mean safety and efficacy indices were 1,01+/-0,22 and 0,89+/-0,22 respectively.
Conclusions:
The trifocal toric diffractive IOL provides an effective, safety and stable restoration of the visual acuity in patients with cataract, astigmatism and presbyopia.
