Clinical comparison of scratch resistance between two different common intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Surgeons are fortunate to have a wide selection of excellent IOLs, allowing them to choose the lenses that perform best in their hands. IOLs are often made of materials that have different propensities for scratching, which has been known to occur during implantation of the lens. We therefore wanted to test the differences between two common hydrophobic acrylic IOL materials on the market in regards to their ability to resist scratching when using a common IOL manipulating instrument.

Setting:

The Eye Centers of Racine and Kenosha, USA

Methods:

We secured both the Envista (Bausch + Lomb, USA) and Acrysof SN60WF (Alcon, USA) lenses on a scale. We then zeroed the scale after the lenses were placed. Using a Sinskey hook, we made 8 passes across each of the lenses keeping the pressure less than 1 oz, recording the pressures for each of the passes. We then examined the lenses for visible scratches on the lens. We performed this technique on 3 of each of the lenses. Photos were taken.

Results:

All 3 of the Acrysof SN60WF lenses exhibited scratches on the lens whereas there were no observable scratches on the Envista lenses. On the 3 Acrysof lenses, we observed 4 scratches on 2 of the lenses and 3 scratches on the other.

Conclusions:

There does appear to be a difference in scratch resistance between the two hydrophobic acrylic lenses. More studies are needed to determine the clinical relevance of this difference.
