Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe changes in the circadian cycle in patients undergoing cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL).
Setting:
Fundacion Hospital, Nuestra SeƱora De La Luz, Iap, Mexico
Methods:
A prospective, comparative, non-interventional, longitudinal study in patients undergoing cataract surgery with IOL implantation, from May to September 2015. Two groups were formed: A, patients with bilateral cataract surgery with IOL chromophores for filtration of blue light and B, patients with bilateral cataract surgery with IOL without chromophores. In both groups the Index Pittsburg Sleep Quality (PSQI) presurgical and postsurgical was determined. As of cataract surgery in the second eye daytime melatonin levels they were measured in saliva MicroELISA. The results were compared between groups.
Results:
Of 40 patients, 24 were placed IOL with chromophores and 16 with IOL without chromophores. The average age was 68.8 years (range 44-91 years). The ICSP postsurgical score in group A was 7.66 and 5.56 in the B, being a statistically significant difference between groups (p 0.0416). Daytime melatonin levels measured in saliva postsurgical group A was 3.05 pg / ml and the B 1.51 pg / ml, showing a statistically significant difference between groups (p 0.0022).
Conclusions:
The results of this study suggest that IOL with chromophore to have effect on the circadian rhythm of patients, prone to poor sleep quality.
