Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcomes, safety and potential side effects of a Small- Aperture IOL (IC-8) implanted monocularly in the non dominant eye in cataract patients.

Setting:

sehkraft Augenzentrum Cologne, Germany Augenzentrum Aus der Au, Fribourg, Switzerland

Methods:

This single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOL includes an opaque mask with a central small aperture of 1.36mm. It is implanted during standard cataract surgery targeting a post-op refraction of -0,75 D. If necessary an aspheric monofocal IOL is implanted in the dominant eye. Monocular uncorrected, and target-corrected (-0,75 Dpt.) visual acuities for near, intermediate and distance, manifest refraction, subjective satisfaction and complications were evaluated 3 months after surgery.

Results:

In our first patients (n=9) mean monocular uncorrected distance and intermediate visual acuity improved to 20/20 and 20/25, respectively, at 3 months after surgery. Uncorrected near visual acuity was J3. Mean postoperative MRSE was +0.08 Dpts. Target (-0,75 Dpt.) corrected monocular distance, intermediate and near visual acuity improved to 20/20, 20/20 and J2, respectively. Subjective satisfaction is high, all patients would choose this IOL again. No complications were seen in the early post-operative follow-up. Three month results of the full cohort will be presented at the meeting.

Conclusions:

Early results show implantation of a small aperture extended depth of focus IOL provides good visual acuity results across a broad range of vision without significant side effects for the patients.
