Abstract Details

Purpose:

Enlarged depth of focus IOLs present the opportunity of achieving an excellent distance vision combined with an enhanced near vision, when compared with accomodating lenses; and minimized glare symptoms, comparing with those of multifocal lenses. At the same time, post-radiation cataracts are a dire complication that may occur in young patients, presenting an increased refractive challenge for the cataract surgeon, as a perfect distance vision and near vision are the desirable outcome. The authors present two cases of post-radiation cataract patients implanted with elongated-focus IOLs.

Setting:

Case report of patients operated in an opththalmology department - Setúbal Hospital Center

Methods:

The authors present two cases of post-radiation cataract patients implanted with elongated-focus IOLs.

Results:

Case 1: 11-year old male patient with a cortical cataract in the RE post radiation therapy for a sinusal rabdomyossarcoma. BCVA was 20/200. The patient underwent phacoemulsification and in-the-bag IOL implantation with a Symphony Tecnis® IOL. After 1 month uncorrected VA was 20/25 and near-vision was J2. Case 2: 36-year old male patient with bilateral cortical cataracts, post-radiation therapy for leukemia. BCVA was 20/70 in the RE and 20/100 in the LE. The patient underwent bilateral phacoemulsification and IOL implantation with Symphony Tecnis® IOL. After 1 month, VA was 20/20 in the RE and 20/25 in the LE. Near vision stabilized at J3 in the right eye and J2 with the left eye. Patients felt no glare or other symptoms.

Conclusions:

Conclusion: enlarged depth of focus IOLs propose the best of two worlds: quality distance vision and a substantial aid in near vision, with minimal visual symptoms and optical aberrations, although an additional plus sphere may be needed for more demanding near activities. We report two cases of young patients, with no presbyopia, that achieved a satisfactory result with these IOLs.
