Clinical experiences with a new extended-depth-of-focus intraocular lens

Purpose:
Clinical evaluation of functional results and quality of vision after implantation of an extended depth of focus aspheric intraocular lens (EDOF-IOL).
Setting:
International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany
Methods:
Twenty-nine eyes of 16 patients (median age: 65,5 years) with cataract were enrolled in this ongoing prospective clinical study. The Mini Well Ready EDOF-IOL (SIFI Medtech, Italy) was implanted bilaterally in 13 and monolaterally in 3 cases after phacoemulsification. Follow-up examinations were performed 2-4 months after surgery including subjective refraction, ETDRS uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected and distance corrected intermediate distance visual acuity, uncorrected, distance corrected and bestcorrected near visual acuity, reading acuity and speed (Salzburg Reading Desk), binocular defocus testing, contrast sensitivity (F.A.C.T.), halometry with a Halo and Glare Simulator Software and a questionnaire.
Results:
Two to four months after surgery, mean UDVA was 0.15 logMAR (± 0.10). Median CDVA increased from 0.43 logMAR (range: hand movements to 0.04 logMAR) preoperatively to a mean of 0.03 logMAR (± 0.14) postoperatively. Mean UNVA at 40 cm was 0.10 logMAR (± 0.12), DCNVA was 0.13 (± 0.13) and CNVA was 0.00 (± 0.13) with a mean add of 1.05 D (± 0.45). Mean UIVA at 80 cm was 0.03 logMAR (± 0.12) and DCIVA was 0.00 (± 0.13). Mean difference between achieved vs. intended spherical equivalent was 0.07 D (± 0.21). Median reading acuity at 40 cm was 0.18 logMAR (median distance 36.25 cm, median speed 99 wpm, letter size 1.375 log units).
Conclusions:
The first data with the Mini Well Ready aspheric EDOF-IOL show promising results after surgery in terms of near, intermediate and distance visual acuity and only few disturbing photic phenomena, such as halos and glare.
