Visual outcomes of a segmented bifocal IOL combined with an accommodating IOL

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine visual outcomes in patients undergoing refractive lens exchange when the non-dominant eye is implanted with an SBL-3 lens (Lenstec, Inc., Christ Church, Barbados) and the dominant eye is implanted with a Tetraflex HD (Lenstec, Inc., Christ Church, Barbados).

Optical Express, Glasgow, Scotland

Methods:

Retrospective data of patients who underwent refractive lens exchange with implantation of an SBL-3 lens and a Tetraflex HD in the contralateral eyewere evaluated. The main outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UCNVA),and complications.

Results:

The study comprised of 48 eyes of 24 patients with a mean age of 55yrs. Follow up ranged from 7 days to 60 days with a mean of 16 days. Preoperatively the mean spherical equivalent was 2.6D (range -2.00D to 5.2D) In the SBL eye 75% were 6/7.5 or better for distance compared to 83% in the Tetraflex group. While for near vision in the SBL group 54% were n6 or better compared to 46% in the tetraflex group. At their last review 71% of patients had a binocular UCDVA of 6/6 or better, while binocular UCNVA was n6 or better in 75% There were no reported intra operative or post-operative complications.

Conclusions:

This small pilot study shows that a combination of a segmented bifocal and an accommodating IOL provide good near vision and good distance vision. Larger studies are required to ascertain if this arrangement provides greater spectacle independence than other multifocal IOLs or mix and match combinations.
