Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and YAG laser capsulotomy (YAG-LCT) rate with two 3-piece IOLs: the acrylic Domilens KS-XS IOL and the silicone Domilens KS-3Ai IOL.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Vienna

Methods:

This prospective, randomized study comprised 180 eyes of 90 patients. Each patient randomly received an acrylic 3-piece KS-XS IOL in one eye and a silicone 3-piece KS-3Ai IOL in the contralateral eye. Follow-up examinations were two years and four years after surgery. Best-corrected visual acuity, slitlamp examination (IOL decentration and tilt, fibrosis, subjective PCO score, presence of YAG-LCT), as well as the amount of PCO (objectively evaluated via digital retroillumination images and Automated Quantification of After-Cataract [AQUA]) were assessed.

Results:

56 patients (62.2%) could be examined at the four-year-control. There was significant more amount of PCO with the acrylic KS-XS IOL (1.6 ± 1.7) compared with the silicone KS-3Ai IOL (0.8 ± 1.3) (p<0.004). The YAG-LCT rates of both IOLs were comparable (KS-XS: 25%; KS3Ai: 21%; p = 0.24).

Conclusions:

Both IOLs show good capsular bag performance and low PCO rates four years after cataract surgery. Despite there was no significant difference in YAG capsulotomy rates, the silicone IOLs showed significant better results regarding PCO prevention.
