Abstract Details

Purpose:

We, at the XXXII Congress of the ESCRS, reported many cases of eyes implanted different optic design acrylic intraocular lenses (IOL) and the rate of posterior capsulotomy for the posterior capsule opacity (PCO) for a long periods. Last year, at the XXXШ Congress of the ESCSR, we reported PCO with 3-piece acrylic IOL. This time we will report a retrospective study of survival rate using 1- piece acrylic IOLs with unified observation period.

Setting:

Saitama Red Cross Hospital

Methods:

We operated cataract surgeries in our hospital and implanted 6mm diameter 1-piece acrylic IOLs into 1377 eyes (male 493, female 884, average age 75.0±9.0) from January 2002 to December 2015. Observation period was for 41 months. Based on the medical records, we conducted a retrospective study. We defined the time when we operated Neodymium:YAG (hereinafter Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy as death. We tested if there is any difference of the survival rate between the IOLs with the survival estimates (the Kaplan-Meier method).

Results:

The period until the time of laser posterior capsulotomy incidence of each IOL, after surgeries at the last observation point in 41 months, the survival rate was as follows. SA60AT (Alcon) was 21.5±12.1 months, 98.4%. iSert Micro 255 (HOYA) was 16.1±10.6 months, 97.0%. We didn’t see significant difference in the survival rate between the two IOLs (p=0.08 Log-rank test).

Conclusions:

The study suggests that IOLs with sharp optic edge prevent PCO.
