Purpose:
To report 4 cases of severe ocular injury and visual loss after trauma by paintball gun pellets during recreational activities
Setting:
Tertiary eye care center
Methods:
Case series
Results:
4 cases presented to the emergency room after sustained trauma by paintball pellets while involved in recreational activities.Age ranged from 9-32 years.All of them involved while they are not wearing the safety goggles either during the activity or after sessions ended.All presented with drop of vision,hyphema .iridodialysis.2 cases underwent cataract extraction for traumatic cataract.one case developed retinal break and retinal detachment for which he had retinal detachment surgery.patients having just hyphema and traumatic cataract without involvement of the posterior segment ended with good visual acuity,but those with retinal injury had poor vision as a result of macular scarring
Conclusions:
Paintball is newly spread recreational sport locally in Saudi Arabia with no much compliance to safety rules with resultant morbidity and visual loss
