Abstract Details
Purpose:
SML is an add-on IOL with special bifocal optics to improve near vision in patients with advanced maculopathy. We report on first results of SML implantation in eyes with advanced maculopathy from causes other then AMD (e.g. diabetic maculopathy, Stardgardt, macular hole).
Setting:
Aurelios Augenzentrum, Recklinghuasen, Germany
Methods:
Patients with improvement of near vision in preoperative SML testing (2.5 D vs. 6.0 D) were included. Pre and postoperative visual auity for distance and near, IOP, postoperative Scheimpflug images, intra- and postoperative complications were analyzed.
Results:
Near vision was improved in all eyes. Complication rate is low. One eye needed revision surgery with suture fixation.
Conclusions:
SML has the potential to improve near vision in patients with advanced maculopathy. With proper patient selection reading vision can be restored.
