The prevalence of cataract in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis

Abstract Details
Purpose:
Patients with terminal chronic renal failure (CRF) who underwent hemodialysis are at risk for development of various ocular problems, among of most common are red, irritated eye, corneal and conjunctival abnormalities and cataract. The possible mechanism of cataract development in hemodialysis may be due to metabolic disequilibrium and calcifications.
The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of cataract in hemodialysis patients and in patients with no history of CRF.
Setting:
Thirty patients with CRF undergoing hemodialysis in Department of Nephrology at Zvezdara Medical University Center in Belgrade, Serbia, were enrolled in the study. The study was conducted from October to December 2015. Informed consent was obtained from all participants.
Methods:
In control group were thirty patients, matched by sex and age, with no history of CRF. Detailed ophthalmologic examination was performed and included best-corrected visual acuity, slit lamp examination to detect cataract, determination of intraocular pressure and fundus examination. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS. Chi-square test was used to determine if there was significant difference between study and control group. A level of p <0.05 was accepted as statistically significant.
Results:
CRF patients (17 males and 13 females ; age range 27-77, mean 61.18±11.07 years) vs.control group ( 17males, 13 females; age range 32-78 ; mean 60.23±6.31 years) demonstrated that 23 vs.10 (38.3 vs. 16.7%) had cataract, 3 vs. 8 (5.0 vs. 13.3%) were pseudophakic and 34 vs.40 (54.7 vs.70.0 %) did not have cataract. Chi-square test showed there was no statistical significance in the prevalence of cataract in CRF and noCRF groups (p=0,1297).
Conclusions:
There was no significant diference between prevalence of cataract in patients undergoing HD and normal control patients. New studies with larger number of participants would be needed to show if hemodialysis affects the prevalence of cataract.
