Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess refractive changes after Transconjunctival Cannulated 20-gauge sutureless vitrectomy (TC20SV) in phakic eyes undergoing vitrectomy without  using scleral buckling or silicone oil tamponade.

Setting:

Kasr Eleini Teaching Hospital

Methods:

20 eyes of 20 patients   undergoing TC20SV for a variety of vitreo-retinal conditions over 6 months follow up period. Corneal keratometric readings and Simulated K ´s astigmatism (Sim k´s Astig.) were obtained using orbscan before surgery, one week and one month after surgery. Neither scleral buckle nor silicone oil tamponade were used, to avoid any possible effect of them on the corneal topography

Results:

t  value of max K reading  change was -4.067 and the p value was 0.001 which indicates highly significant change while the  t value of min K reading change was 2.262 and the p value was 0.036 which indicates significant change, one month postoperative the mean max K reading was 44.725 ± 3.2645, the p value was 0.231 and t value was -1.237 which indicates insignificant change ,  the mean min K reading was 42.09 ± 2.9401,the  p value was 0.275 and t value was 1.125 which indicates insignificant change. The mean postoperative surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) one week after surgery was 0.938 ± 0.547 and one month after surgery the mean postoperative SIA was 0.549 ± 0.311ç

Conclusions:

Our results showed that TC20SV has a minimal insignificant effect on the corneal topographic changes one month after surgery with minimal SIA.
