Modified McCannel and Siepser slipknot techniques for iris reconstruction using a double-armed prolene 10.0 suture

Abstract Details
Purpose:
We aim to present a series of patients with iris defects in wich we performed iris reconstructive surgery using a double armed 10.0 Prolene suture.
Setting:
Ophtalliance Nantes, Clinique Jule Verne Nantes, Clinique Sourdille Nantes.
Methods:
We present a series of cases with large iris defects on whom we performed iris reconstructive surgery consisting of passing of the first arm of the straight needle Prolene 10.0 suture into the anterior chamber through a paracentesis, then through the two iris edges and externalised it through the clear cornea opposite to the paracentesis. The second arm of the suture was passed identically, adjacent to the first one. We then removed one of the needles, retrieved the two ends of the suture though the paracentesis and then tied the suture using the Siepser sliding knot technique.
Results:
Using this technique we were able to create a solide “U” iris suture and avoid iris tear in all cases. Postoperatively patients’ glare and esthetic appearance were improved considerably.
Conclusions:
We consider this pupilloplasty technique a good approach for patients with large iris loss, providing good functional and cosmetic results.
