Comparison of gas permeable contact lenses (Rose K2) versus soft contact lenses (Kersoft) for keratoconus and their impact on quality of life

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the role of Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses (Rose K2) versus soft contact lenses (Kersoft) for Keratoconus including the visual outcomes using these lenses. In addition, the quality of life of these patients was compared in order to define their influence on the life of Keratoconus patients.

Methods:
A prospective randomized comparative clinical trial of 40 eyes of patients suffering from keratoconus - 20 eyes with Rose K2 contact lens and 20 eyes with Kerasoft (Ultravision CLPL) soft contact lens. Clinical diagnosis, age, sex, visual acuity, refraction, number of trials, corneal topography at the time of fitting were noted. Quality of life scoring via questionnaire was performed at entry, 1 month and 3 months. Outcome values included best contact lens corrected visual acuity (BCLCVA), daily wearing time, complications, lens power and comfort were noted over a period of 3 months.
Results:
All the parameters evaluated at baseline were comparable between the 2 groups. We could successfully fit both Rose K and Kerasoft lens in all the eyes of keratoconus enrolled for the study. The mean keratometric value of these eyes had a range from 41.3 D to 69.9 D. Improvement was achieved in both the groups in terms of visual acuity, quality of life score as well as contrast sensitivity (p > 0.05). The mean number of trials to finalize lens fit was 3.6 + 0.32 for Rose K2 lens versus 2.15 + 0.58 for Kerasoft (p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
Kerasoft is a good alternative for visual rehabilitation in keratoconus.
