Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the state of tear film in patients with pterygium and to support the proposed relationship between pterygium and tear film
Setting:
Al Sadr Teaching hospital at Al najaf City,Iraq
Methods:
A hospital-based, case-control study was conducted on 55 patients with unilateral pterygium. Tear breakup time (TBUT) and Schirmer test were performed for eyes with pterygium and normal control eyes . The findings were studied and statistically compared using the Pearsons Chi Square and Pearsons independent T test , P value ≤ 0.05 was considered significant .
Results:
Reduced TBUT was found in pterygium- eye with a mean of(11.34 sec.) compared to the control-eye (13.38 sec.) with statistically significant difference . Abnormal TBUT ( less than 10 seconds) was found in 34.5 % of pterygium- eyes compared to 18.2% of controls.
The study showed no significant difference between pterygium-eyes and controls regarding Schirmer test results .
Conclusions:
There is a significant correlation between pterygium and tear film instability
