Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible relationship between menarche and severity of myopia in females undergoing refractive surgery.
Setting:
Matini Hospital of Kashn, Iran.
Methods:
In a cross- sectional study, during 2010-2015, 1000 adult females with mean age 26 years .( age range, 19-40) and mean age of menarche 11.25 years (range 10-16 years), who scheduled for refractive surgery, enrolled in study. All patients, after detailed ocular examinations underwent cycloplegic refraction, measured with Autorefractometer (Topcon A 8000) and spherical equivalent (SE) of right eye selected for analysis. A statistiul analysis was done using univariable regression. (age and menarche with myopia).
Results:
Mean age of patients was 26 years. (range 19-40 years) and mean age of menarche wan 11.25 years. Thirty- two (32%) Percent of patients had low myopia (1-3 diopters) with mean age of menarche 12/63 years (range 10-14), 56% had moderate (3-6 diopters) myopia with mean age of 11.44 years (range 10-16) and 12% had high myopia (-6 diopters) with mean age of menarche 11.50 years (10-16 years).Later age of menarche was associated with lower degrees of myopia (P=0/005).
Conclusions:
Lower ages of menarche is associated with higher degrees of myopia (moderate- to- high myopias). Hormonal changes in females and puberty may have some effects in refractive state of the eyes. Further studies are suggested.
