Abstract Details
Purpose:
Analysis of functional lacrimal complex (FLC) changes in patients after LASIK.
Setting:
Ufa Eye Research Institute, Academy of Sciences of Bashkortostan
Methods:
92 patients (184 eyes) with ametropia after LASIK underwent the study. Evaluation of CSF changes was carried out in terms of 1, 7 days, 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery. Diagnostic tests included: assessment of the corneal epithelium (vital staining of 0.2% fluorescein), Schirmer test-1 (without anesthesia), Schirmer 2 test, tear film break time (Norn test). In postop period patients were divided into 2 groups. The first group - 83 patients (90.2%) who had no overt signs of dry eye syndrome (DES). The second group - 9 patients (9.8%), who had severe DES.
Results:
I1st group patients Schirmer-1 test was 23,1 ± 1,4 mm,Norn test was 10,2 ± 0,8 sec. Staining of the epithelium in the central optical and paraoptical zone of the cornea revealed 3,2 ± 0,6 points. Restoration of normal CSF parameters - increase of basal and reflex tear production was by the 6-month (1,2 ± 0,3 points).
In 2nd group Schirmer test-1 was 26,2 ± 1,1 mm,Norn test was 7,25 ± 0,7 sec. Staining of the epithelium in 2nd group was evaluated at 5,12 ± 0,75 points. Gradual recovery rates of FLC was observed during 6 months, without reach the norm values, indicating the continuing syndrome of 'dry eye'.
Conclusions:
In patients after LASIK in most cases (90.2%) during the postoperative period is characterized by a border or a slight change of FLC indicators and the achievement of values normally occurs within 3 to 6 months period. Almost 10% of cases the changes of FLC in the postop period are persistent, causing dry eye syndrome.
