Wavefront-guided LASIK refractive error corrections following implantation of diffractive multifocal IOL: comparison of wavefront aberrometer examinations

Purpose:
To compare the uses of two wavefront aberrometers in wavefront-guided laser in situ-keratomiluesis (WFG-LASIK) for correcting refractive error following implantation of diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL).

Department of Ophthalmology, Tokyo Dental College Suidobashi Hospital
Methods:
The retrospective study included 40 eyes of 32 patients who underwent WFG-LASIK for refractive and astigmatic error corrections. Preoperative examinations were performed using aberrometers WaveScan and iDesign (Abbott Medical Optics, N=16 and 24, respectively). Rates at which the WFG-LASIK was selected in the preoperative examinations (WFG-LASIK rate) and iris registration activated during ablations (IR rate) were calculated. Manifest refractions, visual acuities before and after WFG-LASIK, and postoperative contrast sensitivity were compared.
Results:
WFG-LASIK rate was 50.0% with the uses of WaveScan, and 75.0% with iDesign. Although IR rate was 31.3% with WaveScan, the use of iDesign increased to 83.8%. With the uses of WaveScan and iDesign, the amount of manifest cylinder was reduced significantly after WFG-LASIK treatment from -0.97±0.78 and -1.07±0.64 D to -0.30±0.34 and -0.36±0.34 D, respectively (p=0.001 and 0.0002). There were no significant differences in the manifest refractions, visual acuities, and contrast sensitivity between the aberrometers.
Conclusions:
WFG-LASIK with the use of the new wavefront aberrometer was effective for refractive error corrections on eyes implanted diffractive multifocal IOLs.
