Myopic LASEK in bilateral map-dot-fingerprint corneal dystrophy

Purpose:
To evaluate the results of LASEK in the map-dot-fingerprint corneal dystrophy.
Setting:
All preoperative and postoperative tests and measurements as well as laser treatment were performed at Optimax Laser Eye Surgery Clinic in London, UK
Methods:
A myopic LASEK with Schwind Amaris 750 excimer laser was performed in a 48 years old male patient with bilateral map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy. Preoperative right eye UCVA was 0.32 and the left eye UCVA was 0.4. Preoperative BCVA was 1.0 (sph. -1.0 cyl. -0.5 @ 132) and 0.79 (sph. -0.75 cyl. -0.25 @ 180) respectively. No pathologies other than map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy were found.
Results:
The postoperative visual recovery was uncomplicated. The patient's UCVA 1 month postoperatively was 1.0 in both eyes, the corneas were clear and did not show any healing disturbances. A grade 1 central corneal haze was diagnosed in right eye 3 months postoperatively and then it disappeared after a course of topical steroids treatment. The haze did not affect the patient's vision. 6 months postoperatively UCVA was still 1.0 in both eyes and there was no haze in the slit lamp examination.
Conclusions:
In a map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy LASEK proved to be safe and effective method of myopia correction.
