Corneal endothelial cell density after myopic LASEK, EBK, LASIK and FemtoLASIK

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the influence of surface ablation and flap laser refractive procedures on the corneal endothelial cell density.

Setting:

All preoperative and postoperative tests and measurements as well as laser treatments were performed at Optegra Eye Clinic in Poznan, Poland

Methods:

160 myopic eyes of 80 patients were enrolled for the study. Lasek was performed in 40 eyes, EBK in 40 eyes, Lasik in 40 eyes and Femtolasik in 40 eyes (all procedures by the same surgeon). Zyoptic XP microkeratome and Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser were used for flap creation and WaveLight EX500 excimer laser was used for ablation. ECD was measured preoperatively and 2-, 8- and 12-month postoperatively with Topcon SP-3000P specular microscope and compared for each surgical technique.

Results:

The results show no significant difference between preoperative and 2, 8 and 12 months postoperative ECD measurements for all procedures. The average reduction of ECD after 2 months after Lasek was 0.43% (p>0.05), after EBK 0.41% (p>0.05), after Lasik 0.58% (p>0.05) and after Femtolasik 0.52% (p>0.05). These values did not change significantly 8 and 12 months postoperatively.

Conclusions:

Both surface ablations (Lasek, EBK) and flap procedures (Lasik, Femtolasik) using Zyoptic XP microkeratome, LDV Ziemer Femtosecond laser and WaveLight EX500 excimer laser did not affect corneal endothelial cell density.
