Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study differences in clinical and morphological characteristics of pterygium according to the spectral optical coherence tomography (SOCT) of anterior eye segment.

Setting:

Clinical, comparative, nonrandomized study was performed at Ophthalmology Department of Odessa National Medical University.

Methods:

We observed 48 patients (51 eyes) with II-V degrees of pterygium. The (I) group included 12 patients (12 eyes) with a stationary pterygium. 29 patients (32 eyes) with progressive pterygium were observed in the (II) group and 7 patients (7 eyes) with recurrent pterygium were studied in the (III) group. All patients were examined by anterior segment module of SOCT before the surgery.

Results:

In the (I) group the following morphological features of pterygium were set: pterygium grows in cornea tissue above the Bowman's membrane, natural eyeball's curvature in nasal sector was preserved, pterygium was covered by conjunctival epithelium, which was penetrated in corneal epithelium. In the (II) group was determined inhomogeneous pterygium, destruction of eyeball's curvature in perilimbal area, pterygium growing in corneal epithelium and partly destroyed Bowman's membrane. In the (III) group was set significant eyeball's curvature deformation in perilimbal area, pterygium growing in corneal epithelium, destruction of the Bowman's membrane and stroma, pterygium structure was inhomogeneous with cysts.

Conclusions:

Differences in clinical and morphological characteristics of stationary, progressive and recurrent pterygium according to the spectral optical coherence tomography of anterior eye segment are following depth of growing, condition of eyeball's curvature in nasal sector, condition of Bowman's membrane.
