Role of anterior segment optical coherence tomography in the study of the dry eye syndrome

Purpose:
To carry out a descriptive study with the aim of establishing the existing relationship in between the biomicroscopic discoveries related to the dry eye (tear film BUT, staining scores and stability of the tear film) and standard usage test (Schirmer) with the discoveries in OCT (tear meniscus height (TMH), area (TMA) and deep (TMD)).
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology,Virgen Macarena University Hospital, Seville (Spain).
Methods:
80 patients are included aged in between 30 and 70 years old, establishing two groups: 40 individuals with symptoms and discoveries during the microbioscopic exploration of the dry eye (both aqueous-deficient and meibonian glands dysfunction) and 40 individuals without such discoveries (control group).
In both groups, the Schirmer test will be undertaken with and without topical anesthetics drops, in order to study the reflex and basal tearing and anterior segment OCT.
Results:
There is a correlation in between the Schirmer test and the discoveries in OCT (TMH, TMD and TMA) both in the dry eye group of individuals and the control group.
The results of the study will be developed determining, on the one hand the distribution of the variables in both groups, and establishing whether there is an actual relationship between them.
Results will be displayed as a graphic.
Conclusions:
The anterior segment OCT is a fast comfortable non-invasive test for the patient, which allows to quantify the tear deficit; it is a useful test in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with dry eye.
